General Motors has introduced the second-generation 2020 Encore and Encore GX at the Shanghai Motor Show last month. Initially this new compact crossover was produced and sold specifically for the Chinese market, before finally landing in the United States in the coming months. The Encore small-crossover is currently proven to be quite successful in the U.S. market with a total of 93,073 units sold out last year. It’s the become Buick’s best-selling model in recent years, but will soon be replaced by a new Encore (regular and GX models) produced by GM factories in China.
Speaking of design changes, the 2020 Buick Encore GX has received many changes with several style revisions and redesigns on the exterior. Although this new compact crossover still has a similar design proportion and size with the current model. While the new Chinese-spec Encore appearance seems far sportier and more impressive than the models currently sold in the United States. It also has a lower design proportion and sharp body line design than the outgoing model.
Tech Specs and Engine Options
The 2020 Encore GX is a long-wheelbase version of the regular Buick Encore. However, it should be noted that this compact crossover clearly looks more upright than its siblings. Although General Motors still maintains a similar design style between these two small crossovers. The most striking revision on the upcoming Buick Encore is the wider grille, and spear like chrome window trim.
Technical specs are not yet known, but the 2020 Buick Encore will be based on the new GM’s Gamma II platform or commonly called GEM. The regular Encore will reportedly share many things with the Opel Mokka which is currently sold on the European market. While the regular Encore will ride on the Gamma II platform, but not for the upcoming Encore GX. Instead, the new GM’s VSS-F platform will underpin the 2020 Buick Encore GX in many ways and it has a larger overall size than the regular Encore.
Both compact crossovers will be available on the Chinese market with the standard Ecotec 4-cylinder engine mated to a 9-speed automatic gearbox or an optional CVT gearbox. As for the United States, the 2020 Buick Encore GX along with its base model will be available with a standard turbo engine and all-wheel drive configuration. Other reports indicate that the new Encore will share the same engine platform with Chevy Trax and GMC SUVs.
As a reminder, the 2019 Buick Encore is currently sold at U.S. dealership with a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine fitted to a six-speed automatic transmission that can produce 138 horsepower at 4,900 rpm and 148 lb-ft of torque at 1,850 rpm. The 1.4L turbo unit is available with standard front-wheel drive and is claimed to have an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 25 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highway, and 27 mpg combined.
Pricing and Release Date
Pricing detail and release date have not been confirmed. However, the 2020 Buick Encore GX is expected to reach U.S. showrooms later this year with a similar price tag to the outgoing model. The current Buick Encore has been sold at dealerships with a starting price at around $23,000 for the base model and around $32,000 for the upper trim level. However, the new regular Encore may not be sold in the United States because its size is considered too small for most U.S. customers.
