There are lots of fresh rumors out there indicating that General Motors will bring the all-new 2020 Chevy Blazer SS to the United States. Initially the new SUV is expected to be introduced at the New York Motor Show last month. Some speculative rendering images are also widely spread on the internet that suggests that the all-new Chevy Blazer SS will adopt a similar design style to the Chevrolet Camaro. Looking at the rendering image, the high-performance Blazer SS crossover is equipped with a more aerodynamic body panel and has a more aggressive design appearance. It’s also offered with new 21-inch larger alloy-wheels, new lowered suspension, and is available in black trim.
However, the new model will certainly have a more sporty exterior design. Currently there are strong competitors like the Ford Edge ST and Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk that fill the high-performance SUV segment in the North American market. So maybe this makes sense if GM plans to launch a high-performance Blazer SS in order to compete with the Jeep Trackhawk and Ford Edge ST. Although this is still a mere indication, considering there has been no official announcement from General Motors so far.
It Get a Twin-Turboc Engine from Cadillac ATS-V
Based on recent report, the 2020 Chevrolet Blazer SS must be a performance-focused SUV that is set to compete with the Jeep Trackhawk. That’s likely to get 500 horsepower from the new powertrain installed under the hood. Well, it’s powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter V6 engine derived from the current Cadillac ATS-V, which is claimed to be capable of producing peak output of up to 464 horsepower and 445 lb-ft of torque. General Motors certainly needs to do some performance tweaks in order to make this 3.6L V6 unit produce more than 500 horsepower.
However, other rumors suggest that the latest Chevy Blazer SS will share the same powertrain platform with the current Cadillac CT6. If the rumor is true, that means this high-performance crossover is likely to be powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 engine which is claimed to be able to crank out 404 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. The all-wheel drive configuration and ten-speed automatic gearbox will reportedly be available as standard equipment on the 2020 Chevy Blazer SS.
The Most Powerful 455-HP 6.2-liter V8 Engine from Chevrolet Camaro
No official performance figures were announced, but the new Blazer SS claimed to be able to sprint from 0-62 mph in just 5.3 seconds with a top speed reaching 155 mph. The CT6 powertrain is not a powerful engine and is clearly not reliable enough to beat the Jeep Trackhawk with 700 horsepower stored from under its hood. However, by relying on the CT6 powertrain, it should be able to compete at least with the Ford Edge ST.
Another possibility is that General Motors will also offer a 455-HP 6.2-liter V8 engine that will be taken from the current Chevrolet Camaro, as well as a new four-cylinder engine with 193 horsepower. The last one might be offered as a base powertrain on the 2020 Blazer SS crossover. In addition, the Detroit-based automaker is also likely to offer a new hybrid and RS version with greater output for the 2020 Chevy Blazer.
Pricing and Release Date
Release date hasn’t been confirmed, but the 2020 Chevy Blazer SS is likely to be introduced in the United States at some point this year. While the official price tag is expected not to rise much from the current Chevrolet Blazer which starts at the base MSRP of $28,800 (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price) and a destination charge of $1,195. So, we can expect the entry-level 2020 Blazer SS to be priced at around $29,000.
